Aftercare

Aftercare is defined as the care, treatment, help, or supervision given to persons discharged from an institution. When it comes to ridding one’s life of a chemical addiction, aftercare can be one of the most important steps toward achieving that goal.

The main goal of aftercare for drug and alcohol detoxification is to reestablish normalcy to a person’s life, minus the drugs and/or alcohol. Many times, aftercare involves various types of counseling and/or therapy to help the recovering addict return to their life. Aftercare professionals offer a variety of family, group, and individual counseling sessions to provide the greatest treatment possible. These sessions sometimes deal with bettering the patient’s self-image and how to find better ways to view themselves in relation to their families and communities. Some aftercare professionals find that the best group sessions are divided into male and female groups and make it easier for former addicts to vent their true frustrations in the sessions.

Another important goal of aftercare is to help patients understand their relapse triggers. Anyone who has ever dealt with addiction knows that relapse is the hardest part of staying clean. Aftercare professionals are highly trained in teaching what triggers relapse and how to avoid it. Many believe that without aftercare, there would never be recovery.
