My son came to a drug and alcohol abuse treatment program from a hospital setting. His situation was at the time dismal. But after eight months, he was able to move out of your drug treatment program to live independently, with the agreement that he would stay in close contact with his counselors. He would also attend school. Your team of hard-working drug treatment counselors was there for him every step of the way. They went beyond the call of duty in helping my son attain his high school diploma. They helped him with school papers, assisted him in meeting deadlines and gave him a place to turn whenever he needed advice. Every member of our family thanks the people of the drug treatment center. What you all did on behalf of my son enabled him to change his life. You gave him tools to make better choices. For that I cannot thank you enough. He truly couldn’t have done it without you. I would hate to see him return to a drug abuse treatment center BUT I know that if my son ever stumbles, you’ll be there for him. And that’s very comforting, especially now that he’s attending college, where he’ll be forced to make the right choices to achieve his new goals.

My grandfather was a drug addict. He started with heroin during the Korean war. My father was a drug addict. He started smoking pot during Vietnam. The probability that I would become a drug addict was etched in stone. A mortal lock, as they say. When I took off for Iraq, I told myself that I am not going to become one like my dad and granddad. But I did. I had always been a drinker, a heavy drinker, but not until I got into the service did my drug abuse start spiking. It was horrible, and I knew from day one that it was in my genes, in my blood. As soon as I got back, I sat down with my granddad and told him what I had done and that I thought I needed drug abuse treatment. He just started laughing. Then, he pulled out an envelope from his desk and told me he had been planning for this day. What was inside changed my life. It was a brochure for a residential drug treatment center in Malibu, CA. He told me he had put aside a little money for this day, how he had been sober for thirty five years, and that he would be happy to drive me. He did. I’m not a drug addict anymore. And ever since then Ive started putting a little bit aside for when my grandson comes to talk to me.

Some people look at drug treatment centers and see glowering, impersonal institutions, places that operate more by some kind of mysterious machinery than any sort of human agency. Thankfully, that’s a long way from the truth.

The fact of the matter is that drug rehabilitation centers….successful drug rehabilitation centers, anyway…are grounded in intensely intimate interpersonal relationships. It’s the people that count, in the end, the people that determine the success or failure of drug treatment centers. Any drug rehab philosophy that fails to recognize as much can’t ever help you get sober for good.

The practical implication here is that the drug treatment program that’s “right” for you is the one that respects and caters to your individual needs. Drug treatment centers can only help addicts get better on those addicts’ own terms. You drug rehabilitation program, if it’s going to work, has to be uniquely yours. A drug treatment center that can give you that much can change your life. A drug treatment center that can’t isn’t even worth your time.

They were destroying my life but they also took the edge off

What is a painkiller addiction? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s a cancer that you personally insert into your life. It really is. I know because I personally was responsible for destroying my life with a painkiller addiction. Yeah, sucks, huh? I started out as a regular guy with a slightly regular back injury and became a guy with a far from regular painkiller addiction. The pain from my injury was fierce and I’ll be honest, it was a little unbearable. I tried as hard as I could to endure it without the painkillers but it was virtually impossible. I started taking the pills and trying as hard as I could to not rely on them, but I finally gave in. I soon became a painkiller monster. I was popping them like candy and not necessarily for the pain. They made me feel good and made me forget the pain. Hell, they made me forget the pain of everything in life. That was all fine and good, but I eventually realized that I had a problem that needed to be handled. I finally made the call and the drug treatment center took me the rest of the way. I got help for my painkiller addiction and turned my life back around. Thank god for drug treatment.

Drug abuse, addiction and treatment

Drug abuse is the best way to destroy your life. It’s even better at ruining lives than my ex-girlfriend. Drugs killed one of my friends in high school and they almost killed my brother Todd. Todd was just like any other drug abuse story I had heard. He got into drugs and alcohol socially and with friends from school. His friends were actually the ones that him into using and eventually abusing drugs. It didn’t take long for Todd to get to a level of drug abuse that was not only dangerous to him but to everyone around him as well. Something finally had to be done to save my brother from the doom he was facing.

Todd’s drug abuse was bad enough to check him into a drug treatment center and everybody knew it. The problem that we all faced was trying to get Todd to realize that he had a problem that needed fixing. We all decided that an intervention was the only sure fire way to go. I knew that we’d get a little resistance from Todd and that was okay. I knew that in the end my brother would come around and realize that we were all there out of love and nothing else.

Things got really emotional that day and we all ended blubbering. It was okay though, because that day my brother checked into a drug rehab and started treatment right away. He’s still finishing up the program these days but I know he’ll be fine. He always is.
